With regard to the weight of economic sectors, services (primarily trade, real estate, business services, hotels and restaurants and financial services, amongst others) account for 68.09% of GVA, followed by industry (27.61%), construction (3.96%) and agriculture (0.34%). The services sector, together with the importance of the chemical and energy industries, make Tarragona the capital of Catalonia's second largest economic development area, after Barcelona.
With regard to commerce, Tarragona has the second largest retail space in Catalonia, with a total potential market only surpassed by Barcelona, thanks to the spending power of its inhabitants and the impact of tourism on its catchment area.
