Port de Tarragona

Tarragona became a logistics hub with the port’s Logistics Activities Zone.

Tarragona's industrial estates are well connected, equipped with modern services and available space to host new companies. These estates are home to companies that benefit from the city’s excellent location and connections. Here you will find, among others, Repsol; BIC Iberia, SANO; BASF; Covestro (formerly Bayer); Dow Chemical Ibérica; Clariant; Carburos Messer; CLH; Euroports Ibérica TPS, SL; Euroports TPS Puerto Spain, SL; Cementos Esfera SANO; Prime Steel, SANO; Carbonell Figueras, SANO; DHU Ibérica, SAU and Aarus Marítima, SANO.

The port of Tarragona and its development as a logistics hub has become an important driving force for industry in Tarragona, where logistics and intermodal transport have acquired a significant weight thanks to the Camp Intermodal Centre and the port's Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL). It is clear that the port would be inconceivable without the chemicals industry and vice versa. The enlargement of the Quimica quay makes the port of Tarragona one of the Mediterranean's biggest ports for the chemicals and petrochemicals sector, and a benchmark in southern Europe. The port of Tarragona has become established as the Mediterranean gateway that brings the chemical industry closer to the world.

It is the fifth most important port in Spain and the first in Spain in terms of cereal and flour shipments, as well as feed and fodder.

In 2016 there were excellent results in cereals, feed, fruit, vehicles, live animals, project cargo and cruises, among others. At the same time, the port of Tarragona has maintained its rates of foreign trade freight shipments.

The port of Tarragona guarantees streamlined inspection processes thanks to the Border Facilities for the Sanitary Control of Goods (IFCSM) building. It also offers quality and speed in port operations through its benchmark maritime terminals for bulk and liquid goods, containers and vehicles, and its service manuals for pilotage, towing and mooring.

One of the city’s most vital elements is its chemical cluster, where 25% of this sector's activity in the whole of Spain is concentrated and which is the most important in southern Europe. According to estimates by the Chemical Business Association of Tarragona (AEQT), the Tarragona chemical park generates up to 45,000 jobs and has a production of 21 million tonnes.

Another of the city’s strengths is that it is the tenth biggest export region in Spain.
