Tarragona will host the XVIII Mediterranean Games in 2018

Tarragona is organizing the XVIII Mediterranean Games after being chosen as the next venue at an event in Mersin (Turkey) by the twenty-five countries of the International Committee. For ten days, from 22 June to 1 July 2018, sixteen municipalities will host the Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games.

This event represents a great opportunity and a significant challenge for the city. The Mediterranean Games have grown since their creation, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) have managed to make it the most important multi-sport event in the Mediterranean area.

In 2018 Tarragona will shine as the capital of the world of sport and the values it represents, and will become the showcase of reference for the different events being organized.

The Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games are characterized by two distinguishing features: a strong regional component and the project's commitment to providing a legacy  for the local development of the territory hosting them.

Almost 58 million euros of public and private investment will leave a legacy in the form of renovated sports facilities in Tarragona and the host municipalities. This is the most important investment in the region in recent years and will have a direct effect on the economy and on boosting employment.

Almost €730,000 have been allocated since 2014 to carry out training programmes with the aim of providing an effective response to the human resources needs for the organization of the Mediterranean Games; to make the most of the previous professional experience of volunteers by boosting their profiles with additional training; to add the maximum possible value to the curriculums of volunteers, promoting their professionalization and the improvement of their personal professional profiles; and the promotion of volunteering to encourage people to commit to voluntary work beyond the 2018 Mediterranean Games, promoting the perception of volunteering as part of people's professional curriculums, boosting its social recognition and incentivizing it as part of a person’s individual development.

In addition, also since 2014, more than €720,000 have been allocated to the execution of different regional projects.

The website www.llegat2018.cat oalso showcases the region's innovative projects in the key sectors associated with the Tarragona 2018 Mediterranean Games, and presents an initial compilation of figures on the impact that the celebration of this event will have on the region.

Ther www.tarragona2018.cat website features specific information about the sporting event.

The 28-hectare Mediterranean Ring will mean a new green space for the city, with more than 3,600 trees and an artificial lake. After the Games, the sports facilities and green zones will remain as a legacy in the city and will be available for use by its residents.

Tarragona is the second biggest sports city in the country.

Without a doubt, this event represents an historic opportunity for Tarragona, and a catalyst for its transformation.  It is the result of a collective project that has been planned and developed in the last few years. This transformation aims to base itself on respect for Mediterranean lifestyles, energy saving, sustainability and the use of cutting-edge technological solutions to improve the quality of life in the city. A transformation model that the City Council has defined as Tarragona, Mediterranean Smart Olympic City, with which it intends to present Tarragona to the world.
